A federal tax lien is a legal claim against property for unpaid tax debt. It can complicate borrowing and property transactions. It is different from a levy, which takes property to pay the debt.
Do tax liens appear on credit reports?
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion no longer include tax liens on their consumer credit reports. The CFPB documented their removal by April 2018. An old claim that a new lien automatically lowers your credit score by a fixed number of points is inaccurate. A lien may still be found in public records, and its absence from a credit report does not cancel the tax debt.
Release, withdrawal and other IRS options
The IRS explains the options and eligibility requirements. A release ends the lien. Withdrawal concerns the public notice and does not by itself forgive the amount owed. Discharge applies to specific property. Subordination changes priority between creditors and may help with financing. These are distinct processes, and approval is not automatic.
What to do next
- Read the IRS notice and keep its dates and reference information.
- Contact the IRS or a qualified tax professional to review the balance and available options.
- Keep copies of payments, agreements and release or withdrawal documents.
- Separately check your credit reports for inaccurate account information and dispute any errors.
