A civil judgment is a court decision. Its legal effect is separate from what appears on a consumer credit report. Understanding that distinction helps you choose the right kind of help.

Judgments and credit reports

The three nationwide credit bureaus removed civil judgments from their consumer credit reports beginning in 2017. See the CFPB’s public-record reporting review. Related late payments, collections or charge-offs may still appear if they meet reporting requirements. Resolving a judgment does not automatically remove those separate account entries.

The court record still matters

A judgment may remain in court records and can have collection consequences. Payment, settlement and a court order setting aside a judgment have different effects. Obtain written documentation and have an attorney explain what the court record should show. Do not assume that paying a debt erases the case or guarantees a credit-score change.

Texas collection protections

Texas generally protects current wages from garnishment for ordinary consumer debts, with exceptions for certain obligations. Bank accounts and property involve different rules and exemptions. The Texas State Law Library’s guide explains the distinctions. Get case-specific legal advice before relying on an exemption or deadline.

Review your reports methodically

  1. Identify the bureau and the exact account or public-record entry you believe is wrong.
  2. Compare names, balances, dates and account status against your records.
  3. Dispute actual errors with supporting documentation. Keep copies and the response.
  4. Keep court deadlines separate from credit-bureau dispute timelines.
